Weeds among the flowers
Weeds among the flowers

I was talking with a friend at church.  She was moving a little slowly.  I asked if I could pray for her for anything.  She explained that she had begun working in her flowerbeds the day before.  She said that as she removed the leaves from the previous season, she was “uncovering” new growth.

I loved this idea.  Just as leaves and debris can cover up new shoots of our perennials—negative thoughts, old habits, holding on to hurt feelings, etc., can keep us from seeing what God wants to do in our lives.  We must be constantly going to the throne of God, asking Him to clear the garden’s-of-our-heart of weeds, of dried or dead things within us. We need to be uncovering any sin, or doubt, or fear that is buried ‘neath the surface of our minds.

At the same time, we should be uncovering God’s promises to us.  If we dig up what He wants to share with us, those things that He wants to store in our minds, in our hearts, we will be able to draw upon these in moments of pain, or stress, or when the enemy attacks.

Lord, help me uncover any areas that need to be submitted.  Teach me to plant Your promises like precious seed.  Let these roots be firmly established, so that leaves and debris do not hinder my growth.  I will seek You, Jesus, because the more that I uncover and discover how You love me, the more I want to know.  The closer that I walk with You, the more our communion grows dear.  And I ask that as we journey together, You would create from my life, the very aroma of Christ. Amen.
