Did you ever notice that cats are swift to notice, “signs?” What do I mean? Let’s think about a few of our activities and how the feline responds. In our home, we usually exercise on our mini-trampolines—before—she gets her evening meal. So she, accompanies us downstairs. We joke, that she sees it as her necessary step, or sign, that food is on its way.
Another example would be if Doug and I are packing for a short get-a-away. As I pull the suitcase and our items together, each of our cats have come close. But when the bags start to get loaded in the car, their presence becomes scarce. Cats learn your routines, the rhythms of your home. They come to meet you when you return from running errands. Get out a gift to wrap or the Christmas decorations—and cats are usually in close proximity. Each of these things is like a sign to them … that something is going on, something good is coming, or a possible treat is on the way.
The Bible is full of signs and wonders. Jesus gave these to us so that we would anticipate His Spirit’s work, experience a quickening of the heart when we feel His presence. And they demonstrate that He is moving, shaping, in control of every happening in or around us.
When Jesus was born, Luke 2:12 tells us, that “this shall be a sign unto us.” That the babe would be found in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. God gave Mary a “sign”—an angel’s appearance and greeting—to tell her that she would become the mother of the Christ-Child. God also gave such a sign to Joseph:
“These are the facts concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her fianceé, being a man of stern principle, decided to break the engagement but to do it quietly, as he didn’t want to publicly disgrace her. As he lay awake considering this, he fell into a dream, and saw an angel standing beside him. ‘Joseph, son of David,’ the angel said, ‘don’t hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a Son, and you shall name him Jesus (meaning ‘Savior’), for he will save his people from their sins. This will fulfill God’s message through his prophets—Listen! The virgin shall conceive a child! She shall give birth to a Son, and he shall be called ‘Emmanuel’ (meaning ‘God is with us’).’ When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded and brought Mary home to be his wife, but she remained a virgin until her Son was born; and Joseph named him ‘Jesus.’” Matthew 1:18-25 (TLB)
The Old Testament is filled with signs, from a burning bush in Exodus, to a cloud and pillar of fire as traveling companions.
During His ministry … Jesus gave many signs as He performed miracles. He did these so that we would not miss Him. He gave signs to demonstrate His power, authority, and divinity (while at the same time, He was fully human.)
What about the ultimate sign—creation? Romans 1:20, tells us that no one has/will have an excuse for not seeing God because He speaks, universally, through all that He’s made. His love, beauty, and creativity are on display, daily.
And we are given these signs so that we are on the look-out for His second coming.
Here’s an interesting Bible Study: try to find examples of “signs” in Scripture … then think about how you would respond if you were present. Now pause, and view them from both the historical and personal perspective—by taking time to note your observations. How is Jesus trying to speak to you through these examples?
