Bread and water sustain physical life. Yet in John 6:35 (GNT), we read that these are a source of strength, power, and the promise of eternal provision for the soul: “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “Those who come to me will never be hungry; those who believe in me will never be thirsty.”

Many of us, will partake of Communion via a church service or online during the upcoming Easter weekend. This bread and cup—represent “oneness” in Christ. They are the elements of His body given for us, and His life’s blood poured out to cleanse us from our sins. This can only happen—upon our repentance and acceptance—and at His invitation to be our Lord and Savior.

But the taking of these elements also represents the “oneness” of Jesus’ body of believers. No matter where we are this Easter season, may we be still long enough to examine ourselves; may we taste Jesus’ sacrifice with a new appreciation and drink deeply of His love—that flowed upon the Cross. For in it was written—grace, hope, joy, and peace—for every circumstance, doubt, grief, moment of separation, or fear. That’s still true for every generation.

Through Jesus’ death—we are offered life. Through Communion—we remember how much God loves us, so much so that He gave His one and only Son. Through the elements of the bread and cup, we are connecting ourselves to the Lord, as His child, and to one another.

Let it remind you that you are not alone. Jesus promised never to leave us or forsake us. So, let us never forsake Him—or fail to remember His offering to us—or to gather together, in whatever form we can (in our churches, online, in small groups, or two by two)—to join hands, pray, bow and praise to the One who sustains us.

The King of Kings walked the road of Calvary to become the Bread of Life. May we faithfully remember and exalt Him on this Good Friday and every day, for His love never fails. It flows freely to everyone who calls upon His name.

Dear Jesus,

With the bread,

I see in my mind,

All that You endured at Calvary.

With the cup,

I feel the anointing,

Of Your forgiveness and grace.

You bowed Your Will,

To take up my sin;

How can I do anything,

But lift my eyes to Your throne,

With love and exaltation,

—My King of Kings?

Amen.
