One way my Mom blessed many lives, including ours, was by sharing from her garden. She was known for her lovely, vibrant, blooming yard. She often said that she “served the Lord daily and gave Him praise as she worked on her hands and knees.” With an axe in hand to shape her borders, she formed her thoughts as a prayer warrior. She gave “startings” of plants to family, friends, and neighbors in every season.
Pictured are a couple of plants that she shared with us. The first is of a cleome. The second is of a Cactus. The third photo shows Amaryllis bulbs in bloom with Coral bells. We smile and think of her as we see these thriving. Another thing that Mom planted liberally was her seeds of faith. Whether through singing, her everyday chores, her various vocations, at church, or in the community, she lived out the message of God’s love.
I know many of you have plants in your garden that came from Mom’s home and hard work. Still, others may have been in her Sunday School class or may have known her from church or the home area (PA) … I hope you have something that makes you smile with remembrance and how she’s “blessing, still” your life.
A life of faith leaves a legacy—still—of God’s love (long after it's gone) because it blesses beyond the seeds planted while on earth for His kingdom.
“He planted a witness in Jacob, set his Word firmly in Israel, then commanded our parents to teach it to their children so the next generation would know, and all the generations to come—Know the truth and tell the stories so their children can trust in God, Never forget the works of God but keep his commands to the letter.” Psalm 78:5-7 MSG
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace.” 2 Timothy 1:5-9a ESV
Dear Lord, thank You for flowers that grow and bloom and remind us of the love that has been shared with us. Thank you for Mom’s seeds of faith and the gift of her happy heart. Thank You for blessing us, still, with the ways that she shared Your love. May we emulate You so that we do likewise. Amen.
