This is a fallen birch tree that we found at the beach ...

There has been a lot of erosion at the beach over the last two years. While my photo shows the tide out, it also shows you that a beautiful birch tree has been toppled by the unceasing tide. Gradually, there’s been a wearing away of the sand and the roots have been exposed. Yet what was interesting? Even though it had fallen, life, was still flowing through it. Fresh leaves were pushing forth in late Spring.

I love finding things like this, because they are like evidence to my heart, that as God moves in creation, He does the same in us. The last two years have been difficult. Covid happened in our world. It has changed the face of work, school, how we shop, interact, even our socializing. It’s left us feeling a little like a fallen tree with our roots, exposed, right? Many of us have endured illness, gone through the loss of loved ones, perhaps lost or changed jobs. Yet, there is life. God is still on the throne! He continues to be Creator, Abba Daddy, Sovereign Lord.

... yet, it was interesting to find that it was forming new leaves.
... yet, it was interesting to find that it was forming new leaves.

So today, I can’t know what you’ve gone through. I can’t imagine what has fallen into your path. But God does. And He wants you to know that He is with you—loving you, creating life in you, breathing a fresh anointing of His Spirit in your heart. For that’s His nature. That’s His loving-kindness in motion, like the tide.

Trust God in the place that leaves you feeling like your roots have been exposed. Check what’s showing in the vulnerable spaces. Do you have a little more trust and faith in Him? What have you learned of the Lord, of His Word in this timeframe? How has He shown Himself to be faithful to you and your family? Are you living in the shadow of His care? Will you—be life—to the next person who goes through what you have?

“For there is hope for a tree, when it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and its shoots will not fail. Though its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the dry soil, at the scent of water it will flourish and put forth sprigs like a plant.” Job 14:7-9 NASB

Dear Lord, when erosion hits our hearts—may we turn to You. May we find You to be our Source of strength, comfort and peace. Grant us roots that can withstand the winds of doubt, fear, and pain. Because if our lives are grounded in the firm foundation of Your Word, of our Salvation, there shall be life—flowing—no matter what befalls us. Amen.

If you have breath in your lungs—yet life—is flowing, to show you, that God is moving within you.

Need a little encouragement from God’s Word about roots and trees? Jeremiah 17:7-8, Isaiah 53:1-3, Psalm 1:3, John 15:5, Colossians 2:7
