Tree with a large branch torn away
Tree with a large branch torn away

Recently, we experienced storms in our area, and tornado sirens went off twice within a short timeframe. We took shelter in our basement—just in case—but in our immediate area, we only lost power for a few minutes. We saw a few trees in our neighborhood that had limb damage, and it took a few days for the debris to be cleared.

But as we went to church Sunday, we found this tree. As you can see, a limb was completely torn away. Immediately, I thought of a few circumstances in our lives over the last few years that have felt like this. And I could feel the Lord asking: “What do you do when things get torn away from you?”

Good question, right? Do we turn toward the Lord? Do we seek His comfort? Do we talk to Him? Do we run into His arms for shelter, healing, and wholeness? How do you handle pain—whether it’s physical or emotional? Whom do you seek when life is difficult, you’re out of a job, a loved one dies, or you’re hit with an unexpected challenge?

Sometimes, how we react when God allows something/someone to be taken from us shows us a lot about our character. It teaches us a lot about what’s important. Unfortunately, it can sometimes demonstrate that while those around us (especially Christians) “should” encourage us during these times, that’s not always the case.

When the Lord allows something to be “torn away,” ask yourself if He wants more of you, your attention, and your devotion.

When things happen that leave you feeling hollow—turn to the only One Who can make you feel at peace, whole, and completely loved.

Remember that Jesus says that He is the Vine, and we are the branches (John 5:15). If we’re His child, we’re grafted into Him, and He into us. So cleave, dear ones, to the One Who can hold you fast in His care during any storm because nothing/no one can tear you away from Jesus!

Psalm 62:6-8 &11-12 “Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him. 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge. Selah 11 God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: strength belongs to God, 12 and faithful love belongs to you, Lord. For you repay each according to his works (CSB).”
