We were pulling out from an ATM at our local bank when this occurred. As we approached the “STOP” sign, two families of geese ambled across the road at that very moment.
I found it interesting that we had to “do as instructed.” We needed to stop in order for the geese and their goslings to cross safely. A seemingly insignificant task suddenly developed deeper meaning.
Ever find that in life? We must “do as instructed” if we are to obey God. He’s given us the Ten Commandments, but He’s also given us many promises that serve as instructions with blessings when we comply with His Will.
For instance, Proverbs 3:5-6 comes to mind. Let’s read it together in this context.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (NIV).”
What are we instructed to do? 1) Trust the Lord wholeheartedly, 2) Don’t depend on our understanding (of life, our circumstances, etc), 3) Submit or surrender everything to Him. Then He—promises to guide and direct our steps. The Lord promises to lead us and walk with us—like these geese guard, protect, and nurture their young.
Isaiah 40:10 is another of my favorites. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (NIV)."
Let’s use the same pattern to uncover its truths. What are the instructions? 1) Do not fear, 2) Do not be dismayed. What are the promises? 1) I am with you. 2) I am Your God. 3) I will strengthen and help you. 4) I will uphold you.
Learning to see how God fulfills His Word to us is vital in understanding His faithful, daily care of us.
Here’s one more: Matthew 10:28-29. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (NIV).”
Instruction? 1) Come unto me. 2) When? When you feel weary, burdened, tired, overwhelmed, sad, etc.) Promises. 1) I will give you rest. 2) I will teach You. 3) I will be gentle and humble with you. 4) Your soul will experience true peace.
You see, developing this habit when reading the Word develops gratitude and recognition of how God is watching over us. It’s a beautiful discipline that teaches us to walk closely with our Master. It helps us Stop and see Him as our Savior and Abba Daddy. And it teaches us to rely on Him and His Word for every situation and every step we take in this life.
Do as instructed—Stop—look at God’s Promises, and read carefully His commands. Then, absorb and live in the truths that He’s got you. Trust every step to His care!
