You have to look a little closely,
To see what Tiger Lily is about to display …
One ear is turned toward the window,
And one is turned my way.
I was talking to her,
While a bird sang from the outside;
She was attuned to both of us,
Though inside, she resides.
I was tickled by her antics, thinking,
This is a good example of how to live;
We should listen to the heart of Jesus,
And yet others, our attention, give.
For as we are hearing the Father,
He often speaks into our very souls.
And when we praise and obey His voice,
We will fulfill His purpose,
And ultimately, define our life’s role.
I loved seeing one ear cocked toward me and one toward the window. Tiger Lily made me smile to know that she kept track of my voice while taking in the songbird outside. Her eyes held mine, but her ears told another story. Following Jesus is something like this. We are ever attuned to His Spirit—to follow His leadings—but we must also be aware of the needs around us.
May we keep one ear turned toward heaven and one ear tuned to those we love or who need love. If we seek to please the Lord, we’ll look a little like our cat—with our spiritual antennas up-and-out, at all times. That is how we hear who needs us … and yet are assured that we always have the Father’s ear.
A Purr of Prayer
I am listening, Lord, for Your voice, but I am also attuned to the needs of others. I am asking for their prayer requests; I am observant of who could use a helping hand. Cultivate these disciplines, more and more Jesus. For in being attuned to You, I am sensitive to the hearts and hurts around me. And may I also be a place of solace to those who need to be heard. Amen.
Psalm 116:1-2 (TLB) “I love the Lord because he hears my prayers and answers them. 2 Because he bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I breathe!”
