Darkness still covered the shoreline in shadows. White contrails were softly illuminated, by the first rays of the morning’s dawn. Blue sky and shades of gold, rose, and lavender danced between the two. It was a new day, a fresh beginning. And my heart responded, not only to the breathtaking beauty of the scene before me, but also to the Maker, the One Who created such artistry and put it on display—for anyone who pauses to notice.

In the shades of Your love,
I walk, I dance.
By the light of Your Spirit,
I’m touched by Salvation’s romance.
As I gaze upon the waves,
That lie tranquil and still,
I know I’m held in Your arms of grace,
Until, until …
In the shadow of Your love,
I take hold of Your hand,
Moving within the living rainbow reflected here,
At the edge of the sand.
Suddenly I am calmed;
My mind is at peace,
For the shades of Your grace,
Cover me,
Until, until …
Eternity meets me today,
Until the moment,
That I behold Your holy face.
The early morning dawn and the colors that washed over the horizon brought my soul, quietude. The shades of God’s loving-kindness seemed to communicate His gift of unmerited favor—like a rainbow of promise—to all who look for Him, and to anyone who calls upon His name.
“He saved us because of his mercy and not because of any good things that we have done. God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning. God sent Jesus Christ our Savior to give us his Spirit. Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:5-7 CEV
The Lord shades us in His love, to keep us stepping and dancing, in the close company of God.
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NLT)
Most of us have heard these verses as part of a wedding or sermon. Right? Well, one day in my personal devotional time, the Lord reversed them. What do I mean?
He spoke them into my heart as double negatives. For instance—love is not impatient. Love is not unkind. Love does not … I found it interesting and impactful to hear them this way (verses 4 and 7). And while this may not be proper grammar, it provided another lesson in what love is, and is not.
How might this little exercise assist you, in seeing God’s intention of the love chapter? How might it clarify how we are to live and emulate His life?
