Sun peaking through the clouds
Sun peaking through the clouds

This photo was taken on a Summer afternoon. I love how the clouds rushed in and around the sun. Then, notice how a reflection almost seems to form a shield over and above it? This image seemed the perfect backdrop for the words from Psalm 84:11: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” (ESV)

Dear Lord, thank You for images in Your Word that are so easy to understand. These word-pictures, such as a sun, shield, favor and honor, are child-like in their simplicity. That You would anoint my life with these blessings leaves me in awe of You. These promises encourage me to read the Bible, to praise You, as disciplines. They leave me wanting to know You more intimately. Teach me Father, how to live in an upright fashion. Show me how to represent Your renown since I bear Your name as a child of God. And let me find favor to be called—good and faithful servant—when I stand before You someday. Amen.

If God is our sun and shield—we have assurance of His protection and love—as we walk each day in the light of His grace. The sun is a powerful image of illumination. A shield is a mighty picture of protection. And the person who draws near to God—is held in the arms of the One Who is steadfast and true, forever. Selah. That’s reason (To Pause and Praise!)
