A mama duck and her ducklings resting by the lake
A mama duck and her ducklings resting by the lake

One day last week, we took a bike ride that yielded a favorite writing spot of mine. Mama and her eight ducklings met us there. As I came near, I began to talk quietly to them. Mama watched and listened, but neither she nor her young ones moved from their cozy spot by the lake.

We sat down on a nearby bench and enjoyed sharing the beautiful day. If you look closely, you’ll see one of the ducklings wanted to interact with me. With beak wide open, she was ready to sing! We stayed for about 20 minutes, and they were our delightful companions.

I’ve always loved the images in the Bible where Jesus is portrayed as taking us under His wings. Finding refuge such as His brings us peace. It means that we are loved and blessed and that He knows everything about us and our every need. It means that He’s always aware of us and seeking our companionship.

Let’s look at a few Scriptures with this theme.

Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark (NASB).”

Psalm 17:8: “Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings (WEB).”

Psalm 63:7: “For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice (NET).”

The images that these verses convey bring a sense of tranquility and calm to my heart and mind. They are reassuring of God’s desire to interact with us. Have you ever thought of this? Way back when the Lord created the heavens, the earth, and everything in them, He could have enjoyed all that He made in its perfection and glory. But because of His gracious nature toward us—He formed us—mankind—so that we could know Him, love Him, and serve Him.

Dear Lord, I come to seek Your company. I’m running under the shelter of Your care and protection. I’m surrendering to Your Will, Your plans, and Your way. I’m listening for Your voice of direction and looking to You for guidance on every decision and step that I take. Thank You for allowing me to be part of Your family. Help me to cooperate with Your Spirit so that I obey and walk in a manner that is worthy of being called Your child. Amen.

If you’re held in the shelter of God’s wings—you’re in the safest and best place possible—because it means that you’re loved beyond measure. God wants to meet you there!
