Earth Day’s history traces back to April 22, 1970. Then, it began to provide awareness, or consciousness, toward how we use Earth’s resources. And while it is a secular movement—what if those of us who are Christ followers—use this day to give (and promote) God's glory? For His earth? For His creation? For Who He Is? For the beauty, majesty, and grandeur He puts before us daily? And for the new heaven and earth that are to come? These are reasons to celebrate!
Here’s what God’s Word has to say about all that He’s made:
“In the beginning, God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 AMP

“They called to each other and said, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory.’” Isaiah 6:3 GW
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth, You who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! … When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place; What is man that You think of him, and a son of man that You are concerned about him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty!” Psalm 8:1-5 NASB
“Shout for joy, O heavens, for the Lord has done it! Shout in triumph, you depths of the earth; break forth into jubilant rejoicing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and He shows His glory in Israel.” Isaiah 44:23 AMP
“Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. … For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. … Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” Psalm 33:1, 4-8 & 22 ESV
“The celestial realms announce God’s glory; the skies testify of His hands’ great work. Each day pours out more of their sayings; each night, more to hear and more to learn. Inaudible words are their manner of speech, and silence, their means to convey.” Psalm 19:1-3 VOICE
“Look at the sky and see. Who created these things? Who brings out the stars one by one? He calls them all by name. Because of the greatness of his might and the strength of his power, not one of them is missing.” Isaiah 40:26 GW
“For the truth about God is known to them instinctively; God has put this knowledge in their hearts. Since earliest times men have seen the earth and sky and all God made, and have known of his existence and great eternal power. So they will have no excuse when they stand before God at Judgment Day. Yes, they knew about him all right, but they wouldn’t admit it or worship him or even thank him for all his daily care. And after a while they began to think up silly ideas of what God was like and what he wanted them to do. The result was that their foolish minds became dark and confused.” Romans 1:19-21 TLB
“Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name; bring an offering and come into His courts. Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble [in submissive wonder] before Him, all the earth. Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns; indeed, the world is firmly and securely established, it shall not be moved; He will judge and rule the people with fairness.’ Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all the things it contains; Let the field be exultant, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.” Psalm 96:1, 9-13 AMP
“All the earth will [bow down to] worship You [in submissive wonder], and will sing praises to You; They will praise Your name in song. Selah.” Psalm 66:4 AMP
“And I heard every creature that is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and in the sea and everything in them saying, ‘To the one who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever.’” Revelation 5:13 LEB
What are we to glean?
1) From Genesis to Revelation, our Creator formed all things for the purpose of communion with us.
2) We, and all of all creation, are meant to proclaim Him and His wonders.
3) We are to have reverence or a sense of awe for Who the Lord is and appreciate every blessing from His hand.
4) Creation was given to mankind so that no one would miss the existence of the One True God.
5) One day, every knee (and every creation) will give Him the honor and glory that He deserves.
Dear Lord, thank You for Earth Day. May we look for opportunities in our neighborhoods, parks, and environments to be wise stewards of the beautiful earth that You’ve created. But may we focus our eyes on You—above all—with gratitude and hearts filled with praise—so these wonders create in us a longing for Your return and the eternal world that You’re preparing for Your sons and daughters, we pray. Amen.
