Weekly Inspiration for the week of 12-18 November 2022

Since we live in a fairly small community in Wisconsin, our voting place often changes with each election. On Tuesday, we were directed to a Firehouse. As we parked, this was the scene that met my eye: a statue of a firefighter, bowed. In front of it was this prayer. “When I am called to duty, God “… (pause).
I love that it is God that these brave men and women call upon—as they go into danger, seek to save—every life, from the the smallest child, to the oldest person that they encounter. It’s a blessing to know that they are listening for the weakest shout/whisper. They answer the call to give their best and to protect both lives and property. And if they should perish while working unto the Lord, unto their community, they are asking for God’s blessing upon one and all.

As I read these words, several thoughts ran through my head. 1) The mindset is a lot like Christ’s toward us. Jesus, came as a Babe, served the Father and laid down His life in the ultimate sacrifice of love, so that we could have eternal life. 2) He desires that none should perish—from the smallest to the oldest among us and answers the quietest whisper and heartfelt plea. 3) If we are His child, it is (or should be) our heart’s desire to answer His call—of obedience, following, serving, of humbly putting other’s first—as was His example. 4) And we should pray for and ask blessing upon everyone around us, without exception. 5) The duty of the firefighter, is much like a son and daughter of the King—to listen for the Lord’s voice, and seek to save lives, so that none are lost.
Lord, give us a passion to know our mission—to pray—and to follow Your bowed attitude. May we consider it an honor to do our work unto You. And may You give us strength, fill us with compassion, and help us to walk in the way of integrity, we pray, Amen.
Prayer is not a duty, but a privilege. It allows us to care for those we know and those we do not know. It is the one gift that we have to offer that costs nothing, but that can yield a priceless return—a soul saved, protected, and brought into service, by bowing to the Will of the Master.
Here are a few bow-worthy places to pause: John 3:16-17, Romans 5:8, 1 John 4:11, Psalm 42:8, Colossians 3:17, Jeremiah 29:12, Psalm 116:1-2, Jeremiah 33:3, 2 Peter 3:9, Matthew 18:14
