A Silhouette of the Nativity
A Silhouette of the Nativity

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 ESV

Father God, I cherish the places in Scripture with the word “therefore.” It indicates to us that we are about to hear precise information or detailed instructions or some messianic promise. And in this case, the news that You are giving is three- fold: 1) You would provide a “sign,” and 2) That sign—would come through the divine birth of Your precious Son, Jesus. The third part of the promise is that You would be called Emmanuel, meaning “God with us” or “God saves us.” And that is precisely why You came to earth wrapped in humanity. Lord, thank You for being Emmanuel—God within us—and God with us (amid all circumstances). You are the One we need to save us from our sins, to bring us joy, peace, hope, and deliverance. And we long to give You the place of honor that You deserve—a home in our hearts—room in our souls to dwell. Teach us to be attuned to Your voice, Your messages, and the beautiful ways You communicate that You’re near. Amen.

There was no room in the inn, yet the irony? Jesus is called Emmanuel—God with us—because He has room for every heart for everyone that answers His invitation to call upon His name to be saved! And He, in turn, makes His home in us—forever.
